Goal 1: Knowledge Base of Psychology
Reflection:
It is important to have knowledge of the history and development of psychology. By having that knowledge a psychology student can understand and appreciate the modern applications of psychology. Being able to understand the empirical findings, theories and concepts, and historical analysis can create a more detail oriented, well-rounded psychologist.

Rationale:
I wrote this paper of the historical analysis of bipolar disorder as an undergraduate student enrolled in PSYSC 491, History and Systems of Psychology course at Ball State University. The assignment was to investigate and present a detailed report on a major psychological concept, theory, or field of counseling. By conducting research on the history of bipolar disorder I gained a new perspective on psychological research and findings that I had previously taken for granted in my undergraduate career. Prior to this assignment I had not given the historical implications of the understanding of mental health and mental disorders much consideration. While researching not only the history of bipolar disorder, but also the history of psychology, I began to gather a more detailed understanding of the research conducted in the field to create the theories and concepts that are used currently in psychology and that are used in the DSM-IV.
The assignment provided above is the final product after a rough draft was submitted to the professor, Dr. Perkins, about a month before the due date of December 2011. The creation of the rough draft shows weakness in my original writing style. The first draft submitted had numerous errors and points deducted because the information I had presented originally was too vague, not concentrated specifically on the history of the disorder nor the history of the treatment techniques used, but both which was too much information to cover as advised by the professor who reviewed my paper. While rewriting this paper for the final submission I reviewed it numerous times and corrected the mistakes I observed in order to submit a nearly perfect paper. By creating numerous drafts of this paper I became more aware of my writing style and how to make it more effective, as well as becoming more familiar with the APA guidelines used in writing papers for psychology.
